What’s your favorite holiday movie?

Everyone has a favorite holiday movie. Or a least a favorite holiday movie. Or a middling, run-of-the-mill, “this-is-fine-for-now,” on-in-the-background holiday movie. For now, let’s focus on the former.

As we close out the holiday season, here’s what our staffers will be watching at home.

At the risk of seeming uninspired, it’s “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989). I grew up on it (and the other Griswold adventures). And pound for pound, there isn’t a better Christmas movie going. I can recite, nearly verbatim, almost the entire movie, which gives me a lot of self-confidence. Plus, our 10-year-old is now into it, which is fun (although the pool dream scene gets a little uncomfortable… but we manage. It’s safer than watching “Old School” [2003] with him, I suppose). “Home Alone” (1990) is a strong runner-up for me, but the adult humor of “Christmas Vacation” really hits home for me. I love adult humor.

“The Holiday” (2006). While some parts are definitely a bit corny, as Iris would say, “I’m looking for corny in my life.” Anyone who knows this movie knows!

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989). I may have seen it as many times as the number of lights on the Griswold Family home.

Probably “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993). It is so weird and creepy and endearing and it’s kind of a kids’ movie but then also not.

As a young’un, it was probably a toss-up between “Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas”  (1977) or “A Charlie Brown Christmas”(1965). However, I can’t help but stop and watch whenever I stumble into “Christmas Vacation” pretty much every year.

As tempted as I am to cite a non-December holiday movie, my heart, brain, and belly are all guiding me elsewhere. So I’m gonna go with “Scrooged”  (1988) starring Bill Murray.

It wins my heart because it was my brother Jamie’s absolute favorite holiday movie, and he recently passed away. This year, and every year from now until the end of time, I’ll watch “Scrooged” around the holidays and remember how much he loved it.

It wins my brain because it is such a smart, cynical, and an ultimately sweet variation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

And it wins my belly because it makes me laugh belly laughs, plain and simple.
